Dream: The Scolding Cat
11/20/22
I wake in the middle of the night to the sound of someone—or something—rustling in the living room. It’s small. A raccoon?
Curious, I move the couch, and discover two green glowing eyes peering back. Scared, I flick my phone screen to put some light onto things and am relieved to find a juvenile dark grey kitten staring up at me with piercing yellow eyes.
“Why you so worthless, human?” it says.
“What?” I stammer, but my mouth won’t seem to move.
“You selfish pervert,” the cat continues. “No think of anyone but self. You suffer consequences. Deservedly so.”
I lunge to catch the creature, but it scurries away, darting up the front hallway. I stumble and fall to the floor but it bounces me to the door.
Desperate, I open the front door and chase him around the living room, but he’s too quick. With a final burst of speed, the kitten slips out into the night, vanishing into the shadows.
