Helen’s Resistance
it’s hard for the stubborn to realize how hard they make everyone else’s lives.
Got a call from an older friend Wednesday, married about 4 months. He and she in their 60’s.
He is in rehab to recover from a serious shoulder surgery. He has crippled legs and requires full strength in both arms. So he cannot ambulate with the power of only one arm.
New wife goes to see him in rehab. Happy visit. A housekeeper (f) comes in and starts chatting my friend up. He has a lot of health issues and has been in rehab 20 times in the last 4 years. So he knows the whole staff.
The housekeeper is a little too gregarious with him and stays too long. His new wife freaks out in jealousy.
Flies into a rage. Shouts the quiet timid husband down. Declares the marriage is over and demands a divorce.
Then, she spins and spins and works herself into such a lather that she Has a heart attack. Landed in the hospital the same day. ☹️
FFWD 2 days. She comes off her psychotic break and reconciles with her husband.
But HATES being alone at hospital. Even though she requests no visitors. Saturday evening, leaves hospital AMA and lands at her elderly in-laws to let them take care of her. They are in their 80’s.
It’s a hard night and it takes a houseful of ppl, including two medical professionals the whole evening to get her fed, bathed and into bed.
We left at 11 and prayed she just didn’t fall in the floor in the middle of the night.
Made it to morning when the doctor called and insisted she be returned to hospital. There’s some runaround on who allowed her to leave. She really needs to be on psyche eval.
So. She’s back at hospital now. Hopefully she’ll be there 3-4 more days and then end up at rehab with her husband.
I knew this woman was trouble from the start. But, she needs love and now she’s married to a close friend. So what else can you do but be another hand to help with the lift?
If I could cure one thing in this world it would NOT be cancer, or even death. It would be mental illness. It’s the one affliction that just keeps on giving. And it makes everything else in life that much harder.
If not impossible.
