peach

trip

A grocery store peach.

I didn’t expect much, Just to know it. Did it smell of chemistry? Which they usually do—

Or of peach.

Faint fuzz. Firm flesh, yielding. Stem, single leaf.

Surprise! It electrified me. My whole body racked by chills.

I — ECSTATIC!

Aroma! This wide door to memory… But few passages tonight Go to my youth.

But one.

My grandmother’s peach trees.

Three black things that had once been spindly, having become young fertile.

Where the fruit lay Brown and fetid, Food for the ants.

But, god! How I love this scent.
