A witness, if there was a witness (for only the crickets watched tonight), would describe it as a shooting star. Only much dimmer and slower.

The streak arched down in the dark, making a quiet thud as it impacted. There was a small puff of dust as whatever it was tumbled into the tall waving grass, carving out a long channel through the field.

The crickets grew silent long enough to feel safe again. In short order, the stalks regained their composure and stood erect enough for the wind to restore the channel and the object disappeared into the obscurity of a sea of green.

If the crickets could report an observation, it would be that there lay a small boy. He was curled up asleep, wearing a loose cotton shirt the color of faded sky, and linen trousers rolled at the cuffs, both worn thin. His feet were bare. There were little bits of dried stubble stuck in his blonde hair and dirt smudging his face.

He didn't seem hurt, only resting. And the crickets quickly lost interest and went back to singing their serenade into the windy night. And so he slept for many hours.

When he opened his eyes, all he could see was blurry darkness. The sounds of rustling grass was like the undeniable roar of a waterfall. The smell of young green stalks filled his nostrils and he could taste the soil.

His body ached, and he tried to remember what had happened, and how he came to be here sprawled on a windy summer night.

But, he had nothing.

He didn’t have nothing. Just not the right somethings.

Let’s see—what did he have?

A name —No.
A place?—Blank.
A purpose? A whisper of freedom, maybe.

What he did know was that, his head hurt, his body ached, he was a boy, and the grass, it smelled wonderful.

All things considered, not a terrible balance sheet. Not ideal, but not the worst.

He may not have felt great, but he did feel safe. He sat up. A mistake, his body let him know. But, it confirmed when his head peeked out of his little hide that he was in a swell of grasslands. The dim starlight didn’t illuminate much, but it was enough to sculpt hills of roiling fields far into the horizon.

The boy lay back and laid his arm across his forehead. A new sensation swelled in him: loneliness.

Yes, he could recall the distinct emptiness of being distant— one hidden from the world, though he longed for more.

A thin stream of a tear ran down the side of his face and into his ear. The cold wet tickled the tiny hairs and the sensation betrayed his sadness.

How strange, the boy thought, that something born of unhappiness can trigger the tiny joy of a tickle. Like a hug given in support, small kindness in the face of bitterness was a human remedy for so many things.

It made him smile, the little happiness. And with that thought, his mind relaxed and he drifted away to sleep.

In that timeless state, the boy dreamed. Of warmth and love and laughter. Hearths and food and small joys the absence of which had brought the tickling tear.

Eons passed before he opened his eyes again. Not blurry now. He could see the crisp sharp infinity of the night sky with precision. His head no longer ached and he felt tired, but rested.

The boy studied the stars for long minutes, enjoying how the night winds made the light bounce and twinkle in the atmosphere. They looked like a blanket of diamonds across the sky.

“Oh, stars,” the boy whispered into the wind “why does life sometimes leave us abandoned when we need companions but other times surrounded when all we wish is to be alone?”

Expecting the answer to be a hush and rustle of grass, he closed his eyes and inhaled to listen and decode what the wind whispered back.

When he heard a low grumbling voice, his eyes shot open.

“Life is ambivalent to your circumstance.” The growl said. “Everyone wants someone to blame, but most things just are.”

The boy looked around a little desperate. He thought he was all alone.

“Wh-who... who's there?” He stuttered, a little frightened.

It took a moment before the voice spoke again. The boy began to wonder if he had imagined it.

“Raise your eyes and you will see me.” The voice directed.

He was confused as he looked up and saw only the sky. Another moment and nothing. He leaned back on his elbow.

“Where?” He asked. “Are you invisible?”

“Many things are seen when one is patient.” The voice hummed.

The boy lay back again and looked at the sky for many minutes before he saw it. The star Aldebaran moved ever so slightly toward him and twinkled a little brighter.

He pointed excitedly. "Is that you?"

"Aaaaahhhh, good, good. You know how to see. To be patient. To wait is not a gift most hold." The voice now had a mouth. The boy could see the shimmer of something shifting in the sky.

"Give me a moment, I will come to you." It was warm and kind sounding.

Curious, the boy asked, "Are you a star?"

"Hmmmm—some would say I am a star, others a group. A few have called me a god." The voice said this thoughtfully, as if seeking a way to explain. "The people I used to watch who lived where you rest tonight called me Tayamni Pa'. But not one has called me that in a long, long time. You, may call me Tayamni, or Tay if you prefer."

As the boy watched, he could see now a dark mass warping with starlight. As it got closer and larger, he could begin to make out the faint edges of the shape. It looked like a large black—buffalo. Its eyes glowed a pale blue light and the tips of his horns, tail and hooves all twinkled like the stars.

"I am no god, little boy," now the shape, Tayamni, spoke from a dark mouth. "I am just he-who-waits-and-watches. I observe the universe and man, recording for all time what I see. My friends, the other celestial creatures, that is our task."

As the great beast descended to the ground, its form solidified and its size, still massive against the boy’s diminutive frame, shrunk to approximately what the boy imagined a buffalo would be. The ground shook ever so slightly as the creature's full weight alighted. Tayamni was no longer some ethereal sky monster, he was real flesh and blood, though its eyes, horns and hooves still had that starlight quality.

"Did you watch me?" The boy asked timidly. "I woke up here and I can't remember anything. Just that I am tired and lonely."

"Why yes," Tayamni answered. "That is why I reached out to you. I could feel the ache in your heart and see the panic in your little blue eyes when you peeked above the grasses."

"Please, Tayamni," the boy was eager now, leaning forward on his knees before the great buffalo. "Can you share anything? Maybe it will help me remember."

The giant, settled into a relaxed pose, lying on the ground, forelegs crossed in front of it, like a schoolmaster about to instruct a pupil.

"You have made this journey before." He began, "Many times. Your fall here is not a punishment or accident, but a result of having outgrown something you share. A connection whose form cannot contain your want and desire. As with any container, when full, it overflows. essentially, your love overflowed the universe and you are washed away as a result. Carried by some etheric tempest."

The boy looked confused.

"This was no act of aggression, my young friend." Tayamni assured him. "There is no anger involved. You were released by love. Some lights grow too bright to hold in the palm, so they return to the sky."

"But—" the boy began "I am not in the sky. Right? I am here, so why didn't I return as you were?"

The old bull leaned his enormous head toward the Boy, cocked it slightly so one eye drew close, it was the size of a saucer. "THAT, is the question you always ask! I cannot say except to presume it is your desire. Your want for this love is so great, you are unwilling to leave it behind and ascend to your place in the heavens. If you look there in the night sky, you can see a tiny blank spot where you belong."

The astral animal gestured to the northern sky with his sparkling hoof.

"Do I find that which I seek? This great thing I cannot deny?" the boy was calm, seeking clarity.

"Perhaps. You always leave seeking. And I can only assume at some level, you find your goal, but always you fall here, in the cricket grasses. They’re already singing of your return. You’re big news in the lives of little insects." The boy was sure he saw Tayamni smiling and wink as he said this. They could not speak of the boy's journey, but would always sing what they knew.

"Tonight, you will rest and sleep through tomorrow. Starlight travels best in the dark and dawn grows closer even now." he said as the eastern horizon bloomed the faintest of magentas against the inky indigo sky.

"The rest of your journey will wait for you. The destination always will. This much, I do know."

"You know that which I seek?" again the boy piqued.

"No, no, my little star—" the buffalo shook its head. "But I've watched planets orbit stars for millennia and comets who can never quite pull away from the pull at their hearts. When true love is struck, there is no stopping it. You will burn out the universe in timeless pursuit of your goal."

The boy grew suddenly very sleepy as the sky glowed to a bright yellow and felt a great urge to sleep.

Standing to yawn and stretch before leaning his weight against the coarse fur of the buffalo's head he said, "Oh, my—I am suddenly in desperate need of rest."

"I know, starlight." the warmth of the animals voice was very soothing to the little boy, making him sleepier still. "Come, rest in my heart. I will protect you until the daystar grows too weary herself and returns the night to us.

At this invitation, Tayamni's chest glowed pale blue and shimmered to translucence. The boy stumbled next to the bull feeling the course fur with his hand and reaching the glowing heart lay down inside the buffalo. The viscous blue light was like a comforting hug from a mother and in short order, the boy was fast asleep. As soon as he was, Tayamni stood and shook his mane at the rising sun.

"Hello, old girl!" He said as he began to trot eastward. Rumbling into a gallop, the ground shook and the crickets leaped away as the big beast transformed back into his celestial form and glided away into the brightening morning sky. Within moments, it was no longer distinguishable from the rest of the fading night sky.

Day had begun.

The boy woke after a timeless sleep, feeling energetic and alive. The sky was growing dark and the first stars were beginning to emerge.

The low rumble of Tayamni's voice rolled across the grassy plain. "Safe journey, little prince. We will watch your journey and guide you where we can."

The boy stood erect, face to the sky, an arm extended in a waving salute. "Thank you! Tayamni! Do you think I can find her?"

"I have felt your heart many times, my little light." The voice carried the feeling of love and pride the bull had for the boy. "It is pure and true. And a true love like yours will always succeed, because you will never stop."

High above the stars shimmered—kind and watchful, and a tear streaked back across the boy's cheek and tickled his ear, making him smile. So he found the north star, for which he had a strong feeling of kinship, turned right and took his first steps. He was certain of one thing. It was not the first time, but possibly, this would be the last.

And the little audience of insects watched as the boy vanished over the hill. As he drew away they began their song again. Crickets could not speak of his journey—but they remembered. And they sang of it forever.

---

---
#story #adventure #legend #journal #confession #100daystooffset #writing

---
orig: 2025-08-06 23:45:00

div class="hypocrite-footer"
  a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG6b3V2MNxQ"Fish/a

  span class="hypocrite-counts"
    span id="days-since"/span / span id="days-until"/span
  /span
/div

style
.hypocrite-footer {
  position: relative;
  width: 100%;
  white-space: nowrap;
}

.hypocrite-counts {
  position: absolute;
  right: 0;
  top: 0;
}
/style]]>

A red leaf falls

Something rustles
   In the undergrowth.
A wind waves in the tree tops.
Red shoes crunch and scratch,
Climb, stretch, step.
Chic-a-dee skips on a branch ahead.
Cheep, hop, cheep-cheep, hop
Pebble bounces down.
This road only goes up
I keep climbing
But from what?
Nothing to escape from.
Nothing to escape to.
The hope of majesty drives me,
Keeps me moving.
Over stone, under branch
Through the brush
Brambles scratches and pull.

A brown leaf falls

The rush of senses new
Heavy breath
Suck and blow
Inhale, hold
Hold
Hold
Release!
Wonderful rush.
Smell...
wood and fall,
Wet and soil,
Brilliant stabs of light through foliage.
This immaculate beauty
Is everywhere all at once.
Overwhelming.
Synapses forming with
Each breath.
Each thought.
Never more important
than as a beard grows grey.
The world is vast
I will never stop
Unless it stops me.

A yellow leaf falls

I live in a dragon.
All safe warm and cozy,

With so many rooms,
All bright and so rosy.

Why in here there's a kitchen,
For my sandwich fixin'.
And a  lounge to relax,
Read and to roar.
And when I need to sneak around,
that's what secret passages are for.
I don't have a tv
But my library is full of books

When under attack from
Rain, sleet or shine
He's armored
So I barely even notice.
It's fine.

I Change his color every once in a while.
Red, pink, Fuschia or blue he doesn't mind
New colors make him smile!

They say “mans home is his castle.”
But that doesn't sound as cool
As living in a dragon
Especially one with a pool.

So keep your old brownstone,
condos and wagons.
Because I simply LOVE,
living in my dragon.

In a county or shire many miles from here.
Over dales, meadows and lawns.
There lived a tremendous pig with no fear.

She lived on a farm on sort of hard times.
Once very prosperous selling oranges and limes.
A little decrepit and run-down it’s true,
In fact now with only ONE pig,
where once there were two.

She was known to be shy, withdrawn & aloof.
Which only got worse when Pig moved up to the roof.
An old barn, I believe that it was,
With wood shingles and all covered mossy with fuzz.

How a Pig came to live on a peak like a bird
is a story quite astronomically absurd.
There were mountains and goats and some kind of bean,
And I believe a goose and gold of some sheen.
But that is a tale that has been lost with the tide,
For now, let’s solve this riddle of
Why piggy chose her high-hide.

Sun up to sun down and all through the night
Pig found perching on that roof a delight.
Sometimes she would sing, woeful with sorrow,
But, then be very chipper the very next morrow!
When happy, there was dance: salsa, belly or jig,
Because, well… she was that kind of talented pig.

To the chagrin of squirrels, pigeons and roosters all around
Pig’s place on the roof was perfectly sound.
Sure-footed doesn't begin to describe our dear little sow.
Even though she had grown nearly as big as a cow!
Always nimble and quick
Even if it rained and the roof became slick.

The old farmer would plead:
“Oh please great big pig
Won't you come on down?
You've made my old farm the talk of the town!
The Ginses and Egglers both walk by twice each day,
Even though their homes are completely the other way.
The Hornblower boys sneak through the fields to snicker and laugh
And the Cranston girls all gossip as they float down the canal on their raft.”

But pig wouldn't budge
Not for nuts
juice
Berries
Or fudge

It wasn't very long before folks really took notice,
And word spread fast from the hills to the coast.
“Why, you've got to see this pig outside town!
I's up on the dancing and singing around!
It is REALLY something you simply must see!
I’ve been there once, no twice. This trip will be three.”

Such a conundrum only left the old farmer scratching his head.
Pig wouldn’t move no matter what was said.
It might have been the air, or the peace and the quite.
Or possibly just the effect of her diet.

But if you watched Pig close, she would share just what she knew.
When... depended on which way the wind blew.
Yes, Pig, like most pigs, was smart as a whip.
This was all just a ploy, a tactic to avoid a trip.
From the peak of that barn, do you know what Pig could see?
Why, right over the hill, it was the Bacon factory!

Up on the roof dancing and singing around!

<![CDATA[Once upon a time there was an elephant in the room.
!--more--
The elephant was an excellent safe-cracker. We never discussed that he was an elephant. Often we talked of how he was a tree, or a snake, or a wall. Even that he was a safe-cracker... but never an elephant. Such is the nature of the obvious. And we became excited at our cleverness of always speaking of the creature, but never stating explicitly what he was. This was the nature of our game and we both loved it.

And when we needed a safe opened, the elephant always delivered. He was that good. One day, he opened a vault and in it we found the most delicious perfume. It's scent was glorious. Just a single mist was enough to put our minds in a different world, become different people living different lives. Lives of wonder and passion devoid of the inhibitions of our own reality. This faint floating essence would last for days and we reveled in it. But like any dream, it always ended too soon and before we were ready.

Sensing our frustration, our safe-cracking pachyderm would sing like Barbara Streisand... “you never bring me flowers anymoooooooorrrreee...” and bake us lemon cakes that tasted of fresh lemons from southern Spain. When we would eat the lemon cake, we would fall into a deep stupor that was just as liberating and invigorating as that gossamer touch of perfume, but lasted much longer and deeper.

So we spent our days doused in stolen scents and ordering tastes of lemon.
But real life never stops.
The Wolf Had An Enemy

<![CDATA[He was VERY jealous of this enemy and constantly sought to sensor, stumble or kill him.
!--more--
But the wolf's enemy seemed charmed. Nothing the canine did no matter how hard he fought or how loud he growled, made a difference. The enemy just seemed to thrive and be happy!

After many years, the wolf devised a very devious and heinous plan. A plan to trap his enemy through generosity.

First, he gave his enemy the gift of a few morsels of food and he was sure to be very kind a appealing.

Then he gave his enemy some small things, treasures of high value that everyone admired and more than a few desired.

Over time, the wolf gave his enemy more and more, until one day, thinking the beast was now his friend, the enemy confided, “I have so many wonderful things and I eat so well thanks to you. I have time to pursue my art and music. You are so kind! But the people of the land have grown envious of my success and I grow fearful they will come and take the kind things you have shared with me. I think I will build a storehouse in which to keep them.”

Seeing an opportunity the predator gave his enemy many bricks and mortar and told the builder that he should build a house so that he could be protected, safe and warm. He also recommended to build the home large enough to house his success and any that he may acquire in the future. Most of all, the wolf admonished to be sure to make the doors and windows very small, just small enough to squeeze out of, to prevent others from sneaking in to carry away the wealth.

“But my father says it is best to live out of doors, to sleep under the stars and feel the sun on my face.” His enemy told the cunning creature.

“Do as you please, it is certainly good to do those things, and it seems wise. But what about your things? How will you protect them? And how do you know someone will not come and kill you while you sleep because of jealousy or envy?”

So, the wolf's enemy built exactly as the canid had advised and he made very small windows and doors. Thinking himself very wise, the builder also constructed bars on each window and a heavy door for the one small entrance.

The lupine shone with glee, now having his enemy trapped. He gave more and more gifts and more and more to eat until his enemy grew too fat and large to move about the increasing number of of gift he had recieved.

Finally reaching frustration, the wolf's enemy decided to leave all of his wealth and lifestyle behind, to return to simple life he had enjoyed for so many years. It was now discovered the nature of the trap: that he had grown so large that he could not squeeze out of the door he had made. Unbeknownst to the enemy, the devious rogue had come many times in the night and slowly made the doorway smaller until no one could come and go. And finally this night, the wolf sealed it shut.

The hunter was pleased at his trap and would go often to watch his enemy struggle and plead until he finally died as a result of getting and having everything that he had really never wanted.
---
---
b
b
a href="https://remark.as/p/hypocritepoet/the-wolf-had-an-enemy"Discuss.../a

Welcoming comments and critique since 1984

#Story #Confession

div class="hypocrite-footer"
  a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG6b3V2MNxQ"Fish/a

  span class="hypocrite-counts"
    span id="days-since"/span / span id="days-until"/span
  /span
/div

style
.hypocrite-footer {
  position: relative;
  width: 100%;
  white-space: nowrap;
}

.hypocrite-counts {
  position: absolute;
  right: 0;
  top: 0;
}
/style]]>

<![CDATA[8/25/24, 1:41:50 AM

  My day started with thinking I have covid. :☹️

!--more--

Negative!! Thankful it’s just crud: 🙂
I have a crud and overslept and missed FS: ☹️ (but probably just result of too little sleep and too much everything else)
My assistant was ready: 🙂
FINALLY got a repair done at ACH KH that’s been hanging over my head like the sound-system-of-Damocles for 11 months. 🙂
Order greasy spoon Hamburger as reward for a week of good eating 😀
got waylaid by a phone call from my better half ☹️
Jellybean crashed into someone, refuses to admit she did anything wrong. ☹️☹️☹️☹️
Calmed her down. 🙂🙂
Calmed lady (Janie) whom she hit. 🙂

Janie tells me her husband died in Feb. So I empathize and start asking questions. Turns out he fought heart disease for 10 years and died at 50. What a great opportunity to preach. Tell her I worry about making it to 60, but it doesn’t keep me up at night because of my hope for the future. I ask if she reads the Bible. ‘I try, but it’s so hard to understand.’ I explain that of the Bibles I use, the NWT is by far the easiest to read. I offer to have Jellybean reach out and get her a copy. I also explain, that many Bible subjects require studying to comprehend. Grab a tract from Jellybean. And she readily accepts and expresses appreciation. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
When the policeman is done writing his report, Janie is very happy and pleasant as she drives away. Jellybean is a few hours from calming down, her cheeks are flushed and she is VERY frustrated. It is extremely hot this afternoon. I think MRL is dancing on her nerves as this all went down. ☹️☹️
We stop at QT to stand in the AC and get a cold drink. 😃
High on adrenaline and the conversation I just had, when I spot a lady trying to water something in a small ratchet-looking trailer (too small for a horse, but looks like a horse trailer). I shout ‘whatcha got in there, a giant goat!?’ She laughs and shouts back that it’s a small donkey. I approach and strike up a conversation. She has come from AR to rescue the little donkey who has been neglected. He won’t drink. I pet and try to sooth the pretty little creature and talk about how sad it is that people mistreat animals. I am angling to preach, but the moment never feels right. I go to get a some literature thinking that might be a good farewell. But opportunity not seized is opportunity missed. Jellybean has pulled away in her vehicle with the literature. 😀🤨

We stop and visit with SLW who is an insurance adjuster and he has some suggestions (don’t fight the claim, consider paying out of pocket to get the repair done considering the age of the Benz). He recommends a good shop to visit. 🙂
The girls go to get dressed for a party. 🙂🙂
I excuse myself and go for a drinking swim with SLW, where I call you mid-gut spill. Not sure if this is a smiley or sad-face. I think smiley. I think I’ve lost my capacity to be embarrassed with you. I trust you. Except for some areas. 🙂
Our conversation goes on for a couple of hours and he’s really opening up after I share a few things I’ve never told anyone. As he starts to traipse into his trauma and talk about what sounds like sexual abuse, Jellybean calls and needs rescue from MRL. :-( So I have to excuse myself and switch gears for a dance party.
Now I’m being like the life of the party since I’m quite well lubricated and feeling no pain, to quote a friend. A little beer would make these gathers vastly more tolerable.

Note to self: do not wear a Banana-shirt from Carolina beach if I ever decide to rob a bank. That thing is an attention magnet like few things I’ve ever worn.

Wrap the party at 9 and head home, Jellybean is now ready to party. So we head downtown to Pat Green concert.

We start by setting up our chairs outside the venue by campervan Beethoven and eating potato chips and dip. Once, we are snacked, we get tickets and go in where the party is.

He’s loud and brash. And very, very country. Modern country anyway. But not the pop-y sounding stuff on the radio. I guess I think of classic country as I saw it on hee-haw. Pat Green is more modern than that but not ultra-modern to compete with the likes of Taylor Swift.
There’s a 35 yo in front of me fit as a fiddle but foul-mouthed as a sailor. In fact, now that I notice, nearly everyone is very attractive here. By standards in a small air force city, at least. Perhaps a younger crowd, more fitness oriented?

Final few songs are very chill and bass-heavy. It’s a welcome change from the bright and clashy-sounding early set. It feels like he’s found his heart in these later songs, which are likely his favorite.

MRL buys us stickers and goes on her phone. I wonder is she texting someone? Or editing photos? She is cute the way she tries to do the things I would want her to do. I wish she would just embrace the evening for herself and forget that I am part of the equation. But, that is her psyche for the time being. I have always been confident that once her mental capacity is corrected, she will truly come to appreciate Jellybean for her kindness and generosity. And she is generous.

I can tell that after one day, Jellybean realizes she bit off more that she cares to chew for a whole week. But, it will be good that she has to rise to the occasion consistently. I just hope she doesn’t smash the poor Benz again.

After Jellybean is enlivened by her coke and rum. Suddenly her trepidation and stress from the accident has melted away and she is ready to twirl and shout and love that we are out here tonight under the texas stars. And it is an amazing evening. After the grueling heat of the day, the night has opened to strong breezes that rustle the trees. If it was cooler, I would say it sounds like fall.

A perfect night for a summer concert. To be alive and out of doors.

After Jellybean compliments a young woman’s boots, (SHINEY boots ALWAYS elicit a remark) we meet a VERY loquacious, inebriated, and handsy lady and her husband (also very handsy and away more inebriated). We have a delightful conversation with them post-concert when they mention they run a dairy. We are newly enlighten raw-milk drinkers. Jellybean and MRL are interrogating this couple and we learn the name of their dairy, how they spell their last name, what brand of boots she wears, where they grew up, the fact that they have 4 children (6, 8, 10, 12). Good for her after 4 children, she still presents as a picture of health and vitality. The husband laments that the majority of his profit gets scraped away by a corporation that buys his product.

I am genuinely worried about him driving and express as much. He reassures me that he isn’t driving, that they are walking around down the block to a bar that’s open until 2. I don’t think this is any better, but he is unswayed and we part ways. I hope for their children’s sake they get home safely.

We do.

---

a href="https://remark.as/p/hypocritepoet/a-saturday-in-august-2024"Discuss.../a

Welcoming comments and critique since 1984

#story #osxs

div class="hypocrite-footer"
  a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG6b3V2MNxQ"Fish/a

  span class="hypocrite-counts"
    span id="days-since"/span / span id="days-until"/span
  /span
/div

style
.hypocrite-footer {
  position: relative;
  width: 100%;
  white-space: nowrap;
}

.hypocrite-counts {
  position: absolute;
  right: 0;
  top: 0;
}
/style]]>

My day started with thinking I have covid. :☹️
