The Old Doofus and the Sea (story concept)
He’s a lovable, but bumbling and optimistic character. He means well, but constantly gets into trouble. Washed up handyman meets incompetent seaman. Ocean obsessed daydreamer.
He met a colossal fish as a child, but no one believed him… so in his old age he sets out to find the fish adn prove everyone was wrong.
He confuses nautical wisdom and gets basic seamanship wrong. Tangling fishing lines and losing gear overboard. On his quest, he meets confused and absurd sea creatures. A confused octopus, a seahorse with small-man syndrome, a sail-fish who dreams of being a boat, a tiny whale, a wise but grouchy old sea turtle.
The fish he seeks is not only huge, it is sparkling gold and can tell the future. Along the way, he keeps getting visited by a gang of seagulls who take pleasure in picking on the Doofus. They give him directions to find his goal and he finds himself in the battle of a lifetime to haul in his mythical golden swordfish or sawfish or something completely fantastic (made up). But he falls in and discovers that he’s been trying to haul in a shipwreck.
The wreck is filled with treasure and the sleepy village is in awe of his find. In the end, we learn that what the great fish told the old doofus when he was a child is that one day in teh future he would seek and find a great hoard of gold. The old man always thought it was the fish he would find.
