Thirty Five Years From Now
A Poem to my wife
We will stand on the beach At the top of a dune at sunset While the gulls cry in the distance And the reedy grass dances in the Evening wind
I will turn to you and say; 'It has been A great honor To love you And keep you safe— You awaken in me a desire For loyalty, for faithfulness.'
And you will Giggle and say ‘What? I can’t hear you Over the wind and the gulls.’ So I’ll just smile and Put my arm around you.
The sand will pebble my skin ever so slightly, It will be then That I realize You have been Gone for some time.
And though sadness will rise like the tide at my feet, the feeling of honor Will be just as real as It is today.
I write this every year.
