Womansign

Supple and buoyant Measure of a woman.

Elegant curve As a desert dune In the setting moon.

Sign of a mother And of a lover.

To be cradled And suckled, Kissed, And caressed.

Man, in all his Brilliance and wisdom Has never mastered

A creation As lovely as the breast.

A few years ago my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Poisons and a mastectomy were the prescription. I thought a lot about breasts in the weeks after that.

Not just her breasts, my wife’s, those of my sisters, and friends. These anatomical aspects that are functional, beautiful, personality and in some cases even career defining.

Our bodies are both our most and least personal thing about us. After all, in the garden of Eden, our first parents wore no clothes. Imagine how public we would be if we traipsed through life completely naked.

I’ve heard men describe themselves as a ‘leg man’ or a ‘breast guy’ in explaining what they find most attractive in a woman. As if telling you which part of the chicken is preferred.

But I’ve never heard them say, ‘oh, I am a man of the heart.’

Because we do not value modesty or poetry in our greed-obsessed life. But, I’m sure you, dear reader, you’re the kind of man (or woman) who cannot resist a powerful mind driving a raucous heart.

My sister lost her fight with cancer. Treatment did what it does, but it could not stop this modern-day endemic scourge. She was full of life and beautiful right until the end. She was glorious, her breasts and body were glorious, but her most defining and enduring quality will always be her heart.

How I love her so and long to see her again.

God. Damned, I've got a lot to tell her.

God bless the powerful hearts of women.
